IT'S an age-old fact made famous by Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally. Women sometimes fake orgasms.

But statistics this week show that the sheer number of women doing it is far higher than we might have thought.

While 85 per cent of the men who were asked in the US study felt their partner had climaxed the last time they got between the sheets, just 64 per cent of women interviewed said they had orgasms the last time they went to bed with a man.

But coming to a climax isn't as simple as it looks, explains sexpert Susan Quilliam.

She says: "The mistake most men and women make is to assume that penetration alone will mean orgasm.

"Most women cannot achieve orgasm this way. Clitoral stimulation is key to getting the end result."

TIP ONE: Get clit-ed out
When you are having sex, slide your hand down to touch yourself or go on top so you have regular access to your sensitive clitoris or choose a position that means his thrusts hit your sensitive spots.

A tongue, or a sex toy in foreplay is a great way to get you ready for penetration and more likely to orgasm.

TIP TWO: De-stress
Recent research from Holland found that women are only able to climax when anxiety is switched off.

The trouble with faking it is it becomes a vicious circle. You fake it as you feel anxious about not ever having an orgasm, you get stressed about the fact that you faked it (could your man tell, will it upset him, why did you not orgasm properly and so on) and then you can't climax again.

TIP THREE: Proper positions
Woman on top, rear entry and man on top are the best positions to really hit the G-spot, that will help you climax during penetration.

Have her lie on her back and place a pillow under her hips. Her legs should be spread apart with knees slighlty bent and her genitals well exposed for the massage.

Start massaging gently the mound and outer lips of the vagina. Do not rush, go slowly.

Gently squeeze the outer labia (lip) between thumb and index finger and slide up and down the entire length of each lip. Similarly massage the inner labia of her vagina.

Ask if the pressure, speed and depth of the strokes are adequate, or if they need to be increased/decreased.

Gently stroke the clitoris with clockwise and counterclockwise circles.

Gently squeeze the clitoris between thumb and index finger. She will become very aroused at this point so encourage her to relax and breathe.

Slowly insert your middle finger into her vagina and gently explore and massage the inside of her vagina. Go slowly, be gentle and stroke up, down and sideways. Vary the pressure, speed and depth.

With your palm facing up, and middle finger inside her vagina, move your middle finger back and forth (like in a "come here" gesture). Also move your finger in circles and side to side. Take your time ...

You can also insert more than one finger depending on her flexibility and desire to be filled.

Try this: When you massage the clitoris, use your thumb in an up and down motion, while the rest of your hand massaging or resting on the mound.

If she has an orgasm, continue massaging if she wants. More orgasms may occur, each stronger in intensity. Keep massaging until she tells you to stop.

With all that time spent around low lighting, soft music, and heavy rubbing, it can be tough not to think of sex at a spa. But until recently, the female version of “happy endings” has remained doggedly taboo.

Luckily, any “rules” restricting female sexuality are dying as fast as Sex and the City repeats can slay them, and it was only a matter of time before women embraced the notion that “quick releases” aren’t just for men.

“It’s such a well-known thing for guys, and women are finally getting more comfortable asking for it,” said Anna, a self-described “massage healer” who has worked at several upscale spas and performed happy endings on female customers. “Women are finally getting comfortable with the idea that it’s ok to feel erotic in what’s already a really erotic setting.”
The bottom line: We like massages and we like orgasms, so why shouldn’t the two sometimes, er, come hand in hand?

The answer is that they can and do, though the logistics can get complicated.
